For the past 6 months, the world has experienced drastic changes in its economy and lifestyle. COVID-19 has affected you and me in one way or another. For students, regular in-person schooling immediately transitioned into a dreadful and tedious four months full of online learning. Adults have had their jobs taken away or started to work from home. Globally, people’s lives have transformed into months of quarantine and virtual interactions. The pandemic has been relentless and we, as inhabitants of this Earth, have experienced the effects first hand. Our economy has even struggled in providing jobs and stabilizing the demand rate. Without jobs, many families were incapable of putting food on the table every night. Financial problems arose and on top of that, lives were being taken away one by one. Many people have looked through this eye of devastation and misery, where freedom has been deprived and social interactions are a thing of the past. We all understand the severities and conflicts this global pandemic has inflicted upon us. Nevertheless, this blog will provide you with some of the positive effects of this pandemic as well as how we can open ourselves to new resources.
We are lucky to live in an age where resources are easy to use and are all around you. You can simply turn on your phone or laptop and go on the internet. Due to this virus, many resources have become virtual which has become accessible for most of us. As a student myself, I have experienced the dramatic change from learning in the classroom to learning in my bedroom. Even with much negativity spread around the world, I have found ways to engage myself in activities that have kept my mental health intact. The pandemic has forced me to explore the internet for programs and work that I could participate in. Luckily, our generation has responded quickly to the crises all around us. Countless non-profit organizations have sprung up from the depths and come to the rescue of students who have difficulty coping with the unprecedented transition. Teenagers themselves took the initiative to provide education and enrichment for others. For example, Salina Guo, the founder of Just For You Tutoring took the initiative to start this non-profit organization to assist students who lacked the support and knowledge they need to succeed in school as a result of being forced into quarantine. Not only has quarantine opened me up to many tutoring services, but being isolated from my surroundings has also allowed me to explore my passions and create a plan for my future. I realized what career I was interested in and I know that many other students did too.
In these unprecedented times, we have to make the most of what we have access to. There are tons of resources that we can get our hands on such as apps, websites, videos, etc. Many social media platforms such as Instagram are used to promote and reach out to students. Although the world is currently under immense pressure to try to keep the virus under control, we should ensure that future generations will not be left with a gap in their education. This is why we should utilize what we can to continue learning and gaining knowledge. Growth is important especially for students and teenagers. As the world is healing from the wounds from the virus, we as students should take the initiative to join organizations such as Just For You Tutoring to contribute to other students’ education as well and let others be aware of the resources around them.
In the modern world, many organizations and resources can be found on social media. Personally, I found Just for You Tutoring through Instagram! By following the non-profit’s instagram page, I was able to find that there were blogging opportunities! This was extremely exciting for me as I had never blogged before and was excited to earn some experience doing so. Aside from Just for You Tutoring, there are a plethora of organizations that offer opportunities for high schoolers, middle schoolers and other students. Many student-led initiatives allow students to explore career options in art, STEM, humanities and more! Competitions, contests, writing opportunities and scholarships are all out there! As long as you take the time to look for the organization that suits you, you will find it.
That being said, instead of focusing on the pandemic, we should be exploring and looking for alternative ways to further ourselves. Let’s swerve away from the negativity of the world and enter the positive side of this pandemic where numerous opportunities for engagement await us!
